The Tribes and their Advantages

The Romans

The Roman empire is the easiest for newcomers to Travian. Because of their significant social and technological developments, the Romans are the masters of building coordination, and their troops are the Travian elite.
They are relatively decent in both attack and defense. To get this versatility, however, they must go through a long and expensive training.

Their infantry is legendary, but their defense against cavalry is the lowest of all the tribes.

For beginners and those who don’t know exactly how they want to play, the Romans are ideal.

Special Features

  • Simultaneous construction of resource fields and buildings
  • Higher defense bonus from city wall
  • Merchants can carry 500 resources (speed: 16 fields/hour)
  • Extremely powerful infantry, mediocre cavalry,
  • Training is long and expensive.

The Gauls

The Gauls are the most peace-loving of all the tribes. Their units are well-trained in defensive tactics, but their offense is lacking in comparison to the other tribes. Gauls are born riders, and their horses are legendary for their speed, allowing them to move quickly and surprise their foes.

This tribe is relatively easy to defend, but an offensive play style is also quite possible. It offers the possibility to go in every strategic direction (offensive or defensive doctrine, lone wolf or helper in emergencies, infantry- or cavalry-based, settler or conqueror), so anything is doable for a skilled player, but also good for beginners!

For beginning players, Gauls make a good choice due to how easily they can defend, both against attackers and against resource loss.

Special Features

  • Speed bonus: Fastest units in the game
  • Moderate defense bonus from the Palisade
  • Merchants can carry 750 resources (speed: 24 fields/hour)
  • Double cranny size (raid protection)
  • Expensive siege weapons
  • Cheap settlers

The Teutons

The Teutons are the most offensive of all the tribes. Teutonic warriors are dreaded everywhere because of their berserker rage in battle. They are the pillaging hordes roaming the lands, completely unafraid of death.

Because the Teutons lack the military discipline of the Gauls and Romans, they are somewhat slower and weaker than other troops. For offense-minded and experienced players, the Teutons are a great choice!

Special Features

  • Pillaging bonus: Enemy crannies are only 2/3 effective at hiding resources
  • The earth wall is almost indestructible, but offers little defense
  • Merchants can carry 1000 resources (speed: 12 fields/hour)
  • Unequivocally cheap, fastest produced, and the best carrying capacity troops
  • Weak in defense

Walkthrough of the main page

Ok, so I know what it is, can I start making a mighty empire?
Not yet! First, you need to understand the main page!

As you can see, I have numbered several of the items on this picture. Lets have a look and see what they are!

1.(red): This is the Side Bar. It appears on every page in Travian. On the Side bar are several links to different pages in Travian.

Homepage : This is a link to the main page of Travian.

Manual : This opens a manual with a list of all buildings and Units. (Note that while not logged on, it shows the tribes, buildings, and FAQ, but if you are logged on, it makes a pop up, which only shows the units and buildings, but in more detail than the other version.)

Tutorial : This is a small Tutorial of Travian. It doesn’t have all of the useful information like my guide does, but feel free to check it out.

Login : This is the button you press to log on to your account. We, however, are not at the point yet, so just sit tight for now.

Register : This will bring you to the register page, where you can sign up for this wonderful game.

Forum : This leads you to the wonderful forum, but for some reason, I think you already knew that.

Chat : This brings you to a live chat room, where you can get your help fast and easy.

2.(yellow): This is a list of all the different servers. They are based on Language, so if you feel more comfortable speaking a different language, feel free to join the right server that fits you. Just remember, I bet none of the other forums have such an in-depth guide as ours does now lol.

3.(blue): This is the Players’ Statistic. It shows you the Number of Registered Players, the Number of Active Players, and the Number of On-line Players, all at the same time. I never thought of how useful this was, but it must be in some way lol.

4.(purple): This is a shortcut to the Tutorial we talked about before. Not much to be said, except that it takes about 60s to look at, but it doesn’t tell alot of information.

5.(brown): This is a shortcut to the Login page. This will take you to the screen where you can log in and begin playing.

6.(gray): This is just a little section dedicated to the forums. It shows you which post are the newest, so that you can stay up to date.

7.(orange): This is a little section of screenshots you can view, so that you can get a feel of the game before you play.

8.(green): This is the bottom menu bar. It appears on the bottom of the Home page, Tutorial page, links page, Rules page, Terms page, About Us Page, Screenshots page, and Manual page(non pop-up).

FAQ : This takes you to the Travian FAQ, which gives you a bit of useful information, so you should look there if you are in need of a little help.

Screenshots : This takes you to the Screenshot page, which shows you pictures of the game play.

Links : This takes you to the links page, but unfortunately, there is nothing on it.

Rules : This shows all the rules of Travian. It would be wise to read this entire page before registering and defiantly before playing.

Terms : This shows all of the Terms and Conditions you agree to follow when you register and join the wide world of Travian. As you can see, it is in very small print, so that they can put little things like ” you agree to sell your soul to the devil” in the middle and you never know, so I suggest you you read the entire thing thoroughly before joining.

About Us : This page tell you exactly what it sounds like, a little information about the creators of Travian. It give their postal address and telephone number. Hmm, I didn’t know the creators were German . . . guess you learn something new every day.

And at the very bottom of the page, there is the little (C) symbol so no one can steal their ideas.

Signing up and logging on

Ok, so I understand in great detail the main page, now can I start?
WHAT? You haven’t even made an account and logged in! You have to do that first!

As it suggests, you should read through the manual to get a better understanding of the three tribes, but since I’m planning to explain that to you soon, don’t worry about that. First, lets concentrate on the task at hand.

STEP 1 : Come up with a Nickname. As simple as it sounds, sometimes it can be difficult. I prefer original and interesting names, while others love to copy those whose talents in name giving surpasses their own. Whatever name you choose for your new account, just make sure it is appropriate for young children to view.

STEP 2 : Submit your email address. I don’t really have anything to say about this one, lol, since there is not much to say. If you do not have an email address, you can receive one for free from Yahoo.com or hotmail.com . Either one is good and well trusted.

STEP 3 : Create a password for your account. Although this is a simple task, I have a few suggestions. Always try to come up with hard passwords. Never use your birthday or any part of your name, and always try to randomize it. Choosing numbers and letters in no real order is a good way to ensure extra security. Just remember to write it down, so that you don’t forget it.

STEP 4 : Choosing a Tribe. There are three tribes to choose from, each with there own advantages and weaknesses.
As a beginner I think it would be wise to choose one that would bet soot your needs, which are to gain lots of resources and not be conquered. As such, the Gauls, who not only hide twice as many resources in their crannies (Explained later) but also have the best defence, would be a good choice. If you were more leaned toward killing and pillaging, then the Teutons would be the tribe for you. They not only have the best offensive, but they also can loot from crannies, so that the crannies only hide 2/3 what what they are supposed to. so if you attack someone with a cranny size that holds 300 resources (that’s of each type, 300 wood 300 wheat 300 clay 300 iron, so a total of 1200 resources hidden) that would mean that the crannies only really hide 200 resources when you raid them. I think most people, however, would suggest toward the Romans, who are the most balanced of the three tribes. They have equal defence and offence, and they can also build two buildings at once, a resource building and a building in your village. Just go up to the second post and look there for a more in detail description.

STEP 5 : Choose a starting Position. I don’t think your starting position really matters. The fact is, no matter where you land in the game, someone is always going to raid you, so what does it matter? If you truly want an input in where to go, I would suggest southwest, just because that would land you in the negatives, and there is something cool about being in the negatives.

STEP 6 : Read and accept Rules and Terms and Conditions. I really think you should actually read the Rules before clicking the little box, but I can’t make you, lol.

STEP 7 : Click Register. This may be the most simple step of all . . . click the box that says register.

Step 7 will take you to Activation page, where it will welcome you to Travian and also tell you it sent an email to your email address. All you have to do is open up a new page, go to your email and open the message, then copy the code and paste it in the little box under Activation Code. Then press OK. If you look in your email and do not see the message, first look in the bulk section of your email account, and then go back to the activation page and click the green here. It will take you to another page, and give you instructions to get your activation code. I’m feeling a bit lazy, so I don’t think I’ll go over that in great detail.

Your account has been successfully activated!

Click the green log in button, and that will take you to the log in page!
The first time you come to this page, it will be blank, but the second time, if you leave ‘remember me’ selected, it will have the information already placed in. Just type in your account name and password and press login. Its so simple, you could have done it without instructions, but I provided them anyway!

Understanding the Main Buttons

YES! I made an account and successfully logged on! Now can I begin playing?

NO! Of course not! You don’t even know how! But that’s what I’m here for ^_~.

Woo, look at that! That is basically what a new beginners Village overview looks like. No fields built what so ever, but we can get to that later.
As you can see, I have pointed out some crucial things about this game map, lets have a look, shall we?

1.(black) : This is the same side bar as before, but a little different.
As you can see, instead of log in, it has log out, which is you click that, will log out your character for you.

You now have a profile button, which is where you can customize your profile and give additional information about yourself.
There is also no registration button, because obviously, you already did that.

The manual is also different, it brings up a pop up in the same window your on which shows you details of the units and buildings you can have( or can’t have).

And the last one at the very bottom is the Travian Plus button, which is where you can buy gold ((with real money)) and use that gold for special features. You get 35 free gold when you register for Travian (Lucky you!) and you can use it anytime you please. I find using it to make NPC Merchant trades useful, but increasing your porduction for 7 days by 25% isn’t that bad either.

2.(red) : This is the Village Overview button. It takes you straight to the page you are already on.

3.(orange) : This takes you to your Village Center, which is where you can build many buildings, like a rally point, and cranny, or even an Academy.

4.(blue) : This is the Map button, which will bring you to the huge world map of Travian. If you click it, it will show you exactly where you are located, but lets worry about that later.

5.(yellow) : This is the Statistics button. It will take you to something like a ranking system for the game. You can see where you stand against other players, but since your pretty new to the game, your very low on the charts, lol.

6.(purple) : This is actually two buttons. The one on the left is the reports button, the one on the right is the Messages button. You receive reports When you complete a trade, receive reinforcements, are attacked or complete an attack, or miscellaneous, which I have no idea what that one could be. You Receive messages from the game or from other players. When you receive a report, the left piece of paper turns green, when you receive a message, the right piece of paper turns Yellow. You happen to have a message, but you can read it later.

We have talked about the base of the game now. You know exactly what those buttons that will appear on every page does, but now you just need to know more about the game itself.

Learn how to deal personally with an attacker

You are new to Travian. The server protection days are now over and you have a small economy going on. Just when you are admiring your nice resource fields and plan on building something new, you see in blood red “x is attacking you.” For a moment you freeze. “What does he want? What have I done wrong? WHY is he/she attacking me?”

For your resources, it’s pretty simple. Any attacker knows that a small population village is not a strategic conquer (unless you have the bad luck of being near someone really big who’s not pleased to see beginners in his zone), so he’s attacking you to “farm” you. Most of the time there is nothing personal, they are for your resources and will attack till they just can’t take anymore of them.

Now, our next question is: HOW DO I DEAL PERSONALLY WITH SUCH A PERSON? What can I do to stop a Travian farmer to attack me?

1. I can curse him and really tell him what I feel about this.

WRONG! First of all we are not allowed to use foul language in Travian. You might address these nasty words to a 40 year old woman or a 12 year old kid. Would you really like someone like this have to read your words? Maybe not. So, whatever you do KEEP A DECENT LANGUAGE. Swearing someone will have 2 possible results: 1. you gte reported and banned from the game or 2. you’ll be attacked permanently by the farmer and his alliance (if he’s a part of one) until you’ll just delete your account. In both cases your existence in Travian will end in a very unpleasant way.

2. I can try to reason with the attacker in a nice respectful way.

Now this is more like it. As an avid Travian farmer myself I would let people off the hook if approached in a nice manner. The deal with Travian is that you need to “steal” from others to be able to grow. Travian is a WAR game and you have to make war from the first day you have 2 soldiers prepared. Still, most players try to attack inactive villages and let the ones who just want to play enjoy the game.

Sure, there are some “maniacs” who wouldn’t stop at all, but many players WILL leave you alone, if you know how to ask them. You need to prepare a nice message telling them you just started and would like to enjoy the game. You need to be professional and respectful, otherwise you’d get the opposite result.

After being approached in such manner I would stop attacking them myself. I was a small player too, but more aggressive then them, but this didn’t mean I’d enjoy ruining the game for others. Most of the time I’d tell them to eat up the resources as they can until my troups arrive in their village (I couldn’t stop my troups) and I’d also prepare some tips for them to be able to deal with future attacks from others. You can find these tricks in our article: “I am being farmed. What do do.” (removed)

In some cases the attacker might not stop, even after your appeal, in this case you’ll just have to apply the tricks we have mentioned in the article above.

3. Say nothing, just consume your resources and send your army far from the village.

In many cases the farming attack will stop after some time. If the attacker leaves your village empty handed all the time, you can imagine you’d be left alone. No one likes to waste some army time with a village that’s not being lucrative. And since you didn’t get the attacker mad at you by cursing him or being “brave” you’d be just a village that’s no longer worth attacking.

Tactics to use when you are being farmed

This is more of a message for those who are still at the start since once you’re getting to a high population there’s not too much farming, but normal attacks to destroy your village and the strategy would be different. This is for the beginning months when you’re a small village and targeted mostly for resources.1. Cranny

The first thing that helps you is tha cranny. It hides your resources and the attacked cannot gain access to them (except for the Teutons who can take 1/3 of the resources). This needs a bit more explanation. Imagine the cranny as it is: a container with the resources in it. The Teuton can get the upper part of the resources. If you have 1000 resources, the “upper” 333 would be taken. If you have 600 resources in a 1000 resources cranny then he’ll take nothing since the 600 resources are in the “bottom” …

NOTE: The cranny hides EACH of the resources types. If you’re having a 1000 resources cranny that means he hides 1000 of EACH resorce, not 250.

2. The Market

You can send some resources to a friend and have them back after the attack ends. Or you can trade at that time. This is why a well developed market can make a difference. If you just traded some of the resources and they’re on the way they cannot be stolen. If they’re on the market as an offer, the attacker still has access to them.

3. Spend those resources

No matter how (upgrades or buying soldiers), eat up those resources. If an attacker has you on the list of farms he’ll come till you have resources. After few unsuccessful raids he’ll just delete you from the list. It’s a war and a business in the end: if I come empty-handed too many times, I won’t waste my armie’s time on your village and move to another one.

4. DON’T LET TROOPS in the village

This is where I disagree with many who say: have some troops to defend. Unless you’re being attacked with catapults, don’t bother waste troops. Most of the raiders who know their business SCOUT before. And if they see troops they might send an Hero to be trained on your poor soldiers. Just today I killed over 100 troops stationed in a village … my Hero was very happy for such an experience boost.

The main idea of dealing with a farming attempt is to MINIMIZE the losses. If you’re eating up the resources and have no troops the attacker will leave with 100 resources or less .. maybe he won’t come back. But leave resources or troops and he might come over and over again.

5. Send a message

Some of the people I used to raid sent me messages to ask me to please stop. I always do. I started from zero too and I believe that no matter what we all have the right to enjoy the game in the end. Those who sent me a nice message were excused from future raiding. I even taught some of them from the tricks I advise so that they’d be able to learn even more and protect themselves from others. Most of the players would stop attacking you if you write a nice polite message to them. There are some jerks on a power trip, but most are OK.

DO NOT curse the attacker or write in a nasty manner. In the end YOU are the one NEEDING the favour. Most of the time the response would be a massive attack (even with catapults) to finish your stay in Travian. No matter how much of a nice girl I am, if you’re using a bad tone I’ll make sure I bookmark your village and farm the living daylight from you. Or just send catas to see how you’re doing with a 0 population.

These would be some ideas to help you when being attacked for resources. If you have more, please share ;)

How can you be a positive hero in Travian

Travian (such as any game in the end) kinda shows your personality, no matter how hard you’d try to hide this. A lot of daily frustrations get “solved” during the game, many instincts drive you into this strategy game, where you meet thousands of other people and interract.

The so called “sim city players” always have problems, because Travian wasn’t meant to be as a “build as much as you can” game, but as a “if you don’t kill them, they’ll get you” system. And it’s hard for most people since they realize their actions will HURT others.

Were you ever raided? Do you recall the fear you had seeing the red countdown till the attack? How you felt sorry for the resources lost and the armies killed? You know you put other players through this too with your attacks, don’t you?

This is why many people would like to chose the peaceful way so that they don’t hurt others. It’s a nice thing to do, but Travian is not for peaceful people. Sooner or later these nice players will get wiped out. It’s a survival race there and the meek don’t inherit anything, just the delete button maybe.

And still .. how ca you still be a nice person? How can you be a positive “hero” in Travian?

1. Don’t be mean to your “farms”.

As an experienced player I also find it annoying to be contacted by other players to stop attacking them. Some use a nice tone, others use a foul language. Those who curse are reported or farmed till they delete account (I do have my mean days too and swearing is not something I’d gladly deal with), but many of those who are polite might get some time off my raids and also some hints.

I like teaching people from time to time, so I do take few minutes off to offer them some hints to avoid being farmed. The fact I stop raiding doesn’t mean a thing, since they are a target for many others. Knowing how to protect those resources will help them more since no one would be able to take anything from them anymore and the raids will eventually stop.

2. “OK, are you active? Then I’ll stop.”

Many raiders dislike attacking active players. Just because they know how frustrating the game might be for such people who are not able to build anything. But there are still so many villages left by players who stopped playing. Why not take those resources?

In this case you can spare the players who personally contact you and let you know they are active. If they don’t contact you, maybe they don’t care or have a strategy. Or maybe they just left town. You can then raid at ease and have your conscience feel good. You did try to be a good person.

3. Don’t hold grudges.

I know how you feel when being attacked. Especially by a smaller player who just doesn’t get that you are able to crush him in a second. Some smaller players don’t know the “unwritten rules” of Travian and try to push your buttons. Maybe they are just stupid, you think, or maybe they lack so much experience, they just don’t realize how big you are. You can be a good person and contact them to tell them what they are getting into. Solve this peacefully before wiping they village out. Sending a wave of catapults is easy, but maybe you wouldn’t feel that nice.

Overall Travian is not for “nice” playing. You have to raid so that you’re not raided. You need to be the farmer and not the farm. Most of the experienced people first build the barracks and the first 2 soldiers and then consider anything else. I do this too and was able to get to an over 300 population in 10 days.

Still, if you’d like to be a good person, there are things you can do: be considerate towards other players, don’t destroy them just for the fun, try to spare the players who contact you in a polite manner to ask you to give them some time off the attacks. Be a fair player and this would suffice. In the end all players in Travian know what they are getting into. The moment you see all the possible buildings and see how much emphasis is given to troops and military buildings, it’s clear Travian is not for peace.

Buildings in Travian

In the beginning you should try to get a good economic basis. In order to do so you have to extend the 18 resource fields (village overview). There are four different types of resources: Woodcutter, Clay pit, Iron mine and Cropland. If you click one of them, you will get more information and the option to extend it.

Later in the game the buildings in the village become important, too. In order to construct a new building you have to click on one of the green crosshatched lozenges. A list with every building that is available will appear then.

Some buildings can only be build if you fulfill the prerequisites which are other buildings.

Travian Rules of the Game

Travian Rules of the Game

The below set of rules are in addition to the General Terms and Conditions of Travian. You should familiarize yourself with the General Terms and Conditions to verify what is allowed, especially in the case of an account that has been banned for a rule violation.

  • §1 Password, Registration & ownership
Each player may only own and play one account per server.

    • §1.1 Registration
The e-mail address used for the registration of an account must be under the personal and exclusive control of the person who registered the account. The person owning the e-mail address used to register an account is considered the owner of the account, regardless of any other personal or alliance agreements. The owner of an account is fully responsible for all actions taken with the account.
    • §1.2 Password
The owner of an account may not transfer the password of an account to any person playing on the same game world (server). Additionally, knowingly choosing the same password on the same game world as another person is illegal; any of these actions is considered multiaccounting, as defined in these rules.

However, it is permissible to transfer the password of an account to a person or persons playing on different game world (or not playing at all) in order to play a single account together.

There is no compensation for damages done by someone knowing the password for an account. The Travian Team reserves the right to deny service features/compensation/help and may punish the account in question for illegal password sharing. Furthermore an account that uses an insecure password that can be easily obtained or guessed does not qualify for compensation in case of damage to the account.

The person receiving the password is subject to the rules of Travian as well as the General Terms and Conditions.

    • §1.3 Email changes / account transfers
In order to change the email address of your account or to to transfer your account to another player NOT playing on the same server, go into your account profile (/spieler.php?s=3) and fill out the new email information.
    • §1.4 Switching accounts
In order to switch an account with a person on the same game world, both persons must send an e-mail message to admin@travian.com from the e-mail address currently registered for the account. The e-mail must contain the following information:

      • The game world on which the account resides
      • The nickname of the account
      • The e-mail address of the new owner.

Afterwards both persons must request the password for their new account via the password retrieval function.

  • §2 Sitting & same pc usage
    • §2.1 Sitting
Every player has the right to name two sitters who may play the account during an owner’s absence. Sitters must play the account they are sitting to the account’s full benefit. Abuse of this function is punishable.

Permanently sitting an account for a player that is absent for more than 2 weeks is not allowed. Foreseeable periods of absence longer than two weeks must be reported to a Multihunter before the departure of the owner.

There is no compensation for damages done by a sitter. Owners of an account are fully responsible for the actions of any sitters for their account. In the event that sitters of an account do not follow these rules and the General Terms and Conditions of Travian, both the account owner and the sitter may be punished.

The sitter of an account must sit the account using the account sitting function in game. The sitter of an account may not tend to an account by logging on with the password of the account they are sitting (see §1.2).

For restrictions on resource transfers between sitters and sittees (see §3.2.).

    • §2.2 Same pc usage
If there are two or more players using the same computer and playing on the same game world, all affected accounts must be listed in the profile by using the “PC use with another player” function of Travian. Abuse of this function is punishable.

(Playing on different computers on the same network does not qualify as “same pc usage”.)

Players using the same computer and wanting to access each other’s account must use the sitter function.

Read §3.2 for details about limitations for resource transfers.

  • §3 Resource transfers
Every account has to be played to its own benefit and may not be used only to support another account. Being blackmailed into sending resources exceeding the hourly production of the account as described below is not considered a benefit to the account.

    • §3.1 General
In any 24 hour period, regular one-sided transfers with another player may only equal one hour of resource production, including marketplace transactions. One hour of resource production is the total of all resources produced in all villages without subtracting the upkeep for troops.

The abovementioned amount of resources must be split in cases of multiple regular one-sided transfers with specific players. The size of the affected accounts does not matter.

If your troops are reinforcing another player’s village which is under attack, you are allowed to send enough wheat to that player to feed your troops. Normally a sufficient and allowable amount of wheat is enough to keep the troops alive for another 24 hours.

    • §3.2 Sitting & same pc usage
You may not make one-sided transfers of resources to another player entered as ‘same pc usage’ or as a sitter.

Resources may only be traded at a ratio of 1:1 and the resource transfer has to be finished within 48 hours. An exception to this rule is the sending of crops to feed troops that are reinforcing the “same pc users” or “sitters” that get attacked. You may transfer enough wheat to feed your troops that are reinforcing such a village. These transfers should be considered rare exceptions and must stop after 3 days from the first delivery of wheat.

In the event of a one-sided transfer, you should wait 48 hours after the last one-sided transfer has been successfully delivered before connecting with each other using the sitter function or ‘same pc usage’.

Additionally, you must wait 48 hours before making one-sided transfers after canceling sitter status or ‘same pc usage’.

    • §3.3 Wonders of the World and Constructions Plans
The only exception to the aforementioned rule applies to builders of Wonders of the World who actually participate in the race to the level 100 Wonder of the World. Neither the builders nor the suppliers are bound by the transfer limits.

Furthermore the keepers of construction plans may be supplied with any amount of wheat from any account, even if it is connected via sitter or ‘same pc usage’ function, to keep the troops in the village with the construction plan alive.

  • §4 Friendly fire
You may not allow other players to attack or conquer a village willingly if it does not clearly benefit the account being attacked or conquered (see §4.1 for village conquer restrictions). This includes villages you own or are sitting for. Being blackmailed into allowing a village to be attacked or conquered is also not permissible. All of the participants in the attack(s) may be punished.

Resources that have been placed in a village only for the purpose of being stolen are considered the same as resources that have been sent via the marketplace (§3). This does not apply to villages which are property of the attacking account.

Attacking accounts that are in your alliance is permissible as long as it does clearly benefit the account being attacked and you capture not more than one hour of resource production, including marketplace transactions. Attacking accounts that are in an alliance that is allied with your alliance (confederacy) is permissible as long as you capture not more than one hour of resource production, including marketplace transactions. One hour of resource production is the total of all resources produced in all villages without subtracting the upkeep for troops.

Attacking accounts connected to your own account via the sitter function or ‘same pc usage’ is not permissible when there is no obvious benefit to the attacked account.

When making a complaint of friendly fire, the complaint must be sent to the Multihunter within 48 hours to be considered valid. This limit does not apply to friendly fire incidents discovered by the Multihunter on his/her own. Self-accusation can lower the punishment.

    • §4.1 Conquering villages
      It is impermissible to…

      • conquer a village belonging to an account for which you are or have been a sitter, unless two weeks have passed since canceling the sitter option.
      • conquer a village belonging to an account that has been sitting for you, unless two weeks have passed since canceling the sitter option. Abuse of this function is punishable.
      • conquer villages belonging to players entered as ‘same pc usage’, unless two weeks have passed since canceling the same pc usage. Abuse of this function is punishable.
      • conquer a village that has been part of your alliance, unless two days have passed since the account left the alliance.
      • conquer a village that is in your alliance or is in an alliance that is allied with your alliance (only alliances linked with green text are considered real confederates by Travian).
    • Non-aggression pacts are not considered part of this rule. Furthermore oases are excluded from this rule.

  • §5 Use of externals
The use of scripts or bots which automate actions (such as building upgrades, building troops, sending troops, trading, developing researches, attacking alerts or cropfinders) or modify the game interface (for example, grease monkey scripts) are against the rules. The game must be played with an unmodified internet browser. All scripts which excessively tax the server are also forbidden.
  • §6 Program errors
Program errors (also called bugs) have to be reported to an Administrator immediately and may not be used to one’s benefit. Abuse can lead to a punishment of the account.
  • §7 Money transactions
The sale of Travian accounts as well as any indirect transfer (even as gifts) in connection with auction sites or other money transactions is impermissible.

Any sales or purchases concerning real money regarding accounts, units, villages, resources, services or any other aspect of Travian are impermissible.

  • §8 Netiquette
Everyone must communicate in a polite, conversational tone. Multihunters may change inappropriate profiles and village names without warning.

    1. Following behavior is punishable and applies to all descriptions, the account name, alliance names, village names and messages:
English is the only official language tolerated.

Participation in abusive, defamatory, sexist, racist or profane language; disparaging any religion, race, nation, gender, age group, or sexual orientation; threatening persons with actions in real life.

Posting or transmission of any material not suitable for underage persons or violating any applicable local, provincial, national or international laws or regulations, including sexually explicit, illegal, indecent or obscene images, material or links.

Blackmailing players in a way that violates any of Travian’s rules respective the general terms and conditions.

Displaying battle reports in public without consent of both concerned players.

    2. No player may request a real life picture of another player regardless of age or gender.
    3. No real world politics are allowed in names and descriptions.
    4. Profiles have to be kept free of content disrupting Travian’s original layout.
    5. Impersonation of officials or official positions, including, but not limited to, Administrators, Multihunters and the Support, is illegal in any way.
    6. Advertisement of any kind that has not been permitted by the Travian Team is impermissible.
  • §9 Punishments
If there is an offense against these game rules, the Multihunters and, if necessary, the Administrators will ban the account(s) in question and decide on a proper punishment. Punishments will always exceed the gain of the violation of the rules.

Possible punishments include, but are not limited to the following:

    • full deletion or partial deletion of inhabitants (building levels and resource field levels),
    • deletion of villages,
    • partial or complete emptying of warehouses/granaries,
    • partial or complete deletion of troops,
    • removal of or from the alliance,
    • deletion of the account or permanently removing access to in game accounts.

Resources, buildings, villages or troops lost during the time of suspension do not count as punishment.

    • §9.1 Replacements
Resources, buildings, villages or troops lost during the time of suspension will not be replaced by the Travian Team.
    • §9.2 Gold/Plus
      1. No player has the right to claim payment or replacement for Plus/Gold time lost due to suspension.
      2. There is no special treatment for Travian Plus/Gold users regarding the game rules neither in the time needed to deal with the case nor in the punishment.
    • §9.3 Appeals
Players may talk to the Multihunter who banned them or an Administrator either via IGM (ingame message) or e-mail. Bans, punishments or deletions are not to be discussed in public (e.g. Chat or Forums). Appeals must be written in English unless the Multihunter or Administrator expressively agrees on another language.

Additionally, the Travian Team will not provide information to persons other than the account owner.

    • §9.4 Special regulation
Multi accounts on the speed server and multi accounts with less than 100 population may be deleted on sight with no warning.
  • §10 Illegal Logins
You may only access another players account via the sitter function. Abuse of the same pc usage is forbidden. Furthermore it is not permitted to gain access to another account in an illegal way. The violation of this rule can lead to expulsion from the game. The Travian Team never asks for your password.
  • §11 Instigation & Collaboration
Inciting, manipulating, encouraging, assisting or conspiring with others or encourage others to violate any of Travian Rules is impermissible.
  • §12 Deletions
These rules apply for players that will delete their accounts or are currently deleting their accounts without exception.
  • §13 Changing of rules
The Travian Team reserves the right to change the rules at any time.
  • §14 Correction clause
If individual regulations of this set of rules should be ineffective, it does not affect the validity of the remaining regulations of this set of rules. The Administrators commit themselves to replace ineffective regulations with new regulations which replace the ineffective regulations in legally permissible way. These enter into force without delay and will be used in any current case. This also applies to regulation gaps contained in the set of rules. To correct the gap the Administrators commit themselves to work toward a correction, which abides by the intended purpose of the existing rules.

About Travian

What is Travian ?

Travian is an award-winning German massively multiplayer online browser-based strategy game developed by Travian Games GmbH.[1]

The game’s developers drew roughly from Classical antiquity and particularly from the Roman Empire to create a predominantly militaristic real-time strategy. Along with three English versions, and the original German version, the game has been translated into over 40 other languages,[1][2] and has over 3 million players and over 250 servers worldwide.[3][4] In 2006, it won the Superbrowsergame Award, in the large games category.[1][4][5][6]

Travian is programmed in PHP and runs in most modern browsers (such as Camino, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari or Google Chrome). Travian was also the first game of its type to be playable on mobile phones. When played on a mobile phone, it uses Java.[7]

The game

Every player enters Travian as a leader of a small village as a Roman, Gaul or Teuton[8] with two people—a population of two—in their village. The village has only one building, known as the Main Building, around which are spaces for further buildings to be constructed. There are some prerequisites for constructing most buildings.

The outside part of the village in the game Travian. (Click for larger image.)

Around the outside of the village there are 18 resource fields that are level 0 (shown with no number). Every player’s first village has the same distribution of resource fields, but additional villages may have a different distribution of fields. Each resource field is either a Woodcutter (produces Wood/Lumber), Clay Pit (produces Clay), Iron Mine (produces Iron) or Wheat Field/Cropland (produces Wheat/Crop). These fields produce a certain amount of resources per hour, depending on their levels. At level 0, each resource field produces two units per hour. There are also oases which increase the production rate of resources, and can be occupied using a Hero when the Hero’s mansion has reached a sufficient level. Resources are required to construct buildings, to sustain the population and to train and feed troops. (see below). A player can increase the production rate by upgrading the fields.[9]

At the start of the game, the selection of buildings a player can construct is very limited. As the village is developed, a wider range of buildings become available for construction.

A greater aspect for the game is its troops. Troops are produced in the Barracks, Stable and Workshop. They allow a player to raid other villages and steal their resources, which will benefit the attacker. When the Barracks have been upgraded to a level three, the player may build an Academy, which allows them to research new types of troops;[10] the player may also construct new types of buildings (such as the Armoury [11] and Blacksmith [12]) once the Academy has been upgraded to a sufficient level. A Stable allows cavalry to be trained. These units are faster and more expensive than infantry. The Workshop allows siege engines—rams which destroy walls and catapults which destroy buildings—to be manufactured. These units are slower and more expensive than infantry and cavalry. Administrators, known more commonly as chiefs, are units which persuade enemy villages to join the attacker’s realm. Units which gain experience in battle, known as Heroes, can be trained from an existing unit in the Hero’s mansion.

Goal

The ultimate goal of Travian is to construct and upgrade a Wonder of the World (see End game) to level 100. The World Wonder requires millions of resources and takes a large amount of time to complete. Once a World Wonder is upgraded to level 100, the game ends and the winner and his/her alliance is announced. A player needs a construction plan in order to be able to construct a World Wonder; these plans are obtained from Natarian villages (see End game).

An appropriate ranking system has been created that determines the players’ rank from raiding, attacking, defending and building. Players can earn medals for their profile page by taking a certain place in the ranks. If a player gets themselves into the ranks, and earns a medal, it will contain information about the category, the position they came and of what week in since the start of the server they earned it.

Factions

From the left are the Teuton, Gaul, and Roman troops as depicted in game.

There are three tribes available to be played, the Romans, the Gauls, and the Teutons. Each has their own characteristics. The Romans complete upgrades faster than other tribes, the Gauls defend better than the others, and the Teutons are geared towards an aggressive style of play.

However, the actual style always comes down to the player, and his/her style of play. The fourth tribe, known as the “Natars”, are an NPC tribe who were—according to the game—the enslavers of the Gauls and the Teutons before the Romans invaded Travian. The Natars enjoy many benefits normal tribes do not, but only come into the game as part of the end game sequence, more specifically, 300 days after the start of the server (except if the player is on a speed server, in which case they appear after 100 days).

Villages

A player is able to found additional villages. These increase total resource production, causes population growth and help support larger armies. To found a second village the player must first create and extend a Residence or Palace to level 10, and also have 2,000 (500 for Speed server) Culture points. Culture points are automatically produced daily and accumulated, based on the buildings in the village(s).

To found another village after the second, 8000 culture points are needed. 20000 for the fourth, 39000 for the fifth 65000 for the sixth, and so on. Almost all buildings made in Travian give the village Culture points. After the amount of culture points are achieved, the player may train 3 Settlers to go and found a new village at any vacant area chosen. Settlers must be given 750 of each resource before they start their journey. A player may also create an Administrator (Senator, Chief or Chieftain) instead. These units need a level 20 Academy first. They allow the player to conquer another player’s village and make it their own, but a player’s last or only village (i.e. the capital) cannot be conquered this way.

Alliances

The game is heavily geared towards cooperative play. In fact the only likely way to win the game is through cooperation with an alliance. It’s nearly impossible for single players to win, but an alliance can win together.

Resources can be traded between players, and towns can be reinforced with another player’s troops. An in-game alliance feature is also available, providing the main catalyst for strategic play within Travian; players join and fight together from mutual benefit. Within an alliance, players can view attack and defense information for all alliance members, and also benefit from improved communication tools such as mass alliance-wide in-game messages.

Since the maximum number of members in an alliance is 60, ‘wings’ tend to form as an alliance develops. Splitting into wings entitles having multiple sub-alliances, often with similar names, acting as one alliance but in different areas of the game. Wings may not fight and destroy each other due to the friendly fire rules. Players in the same alliance may attack each other, but this would be considered treason. Towards the end of a round, different alliances often join together, resulting in larger coalitions (meta alliances); other diplomatic agreements include non-aggression pacts (NAP) and confederations.

End game

Each Travian server ends with the “end game” sequence. For normal servers the sequence begins after about 300 days, and for Speed3x servers,[13] it starts after about 100 days. After this time has elapsed the Natars, a vicious tribe controlled by the computer, are released. As the players on the server begin to build the Wonder of the World, the plans of which they have captured from the Natars, they meet resistance. With every five levels that the Wonder is built, the Natars attack the villages containing the Wonders until level 95, when they will then attack upon the building of every new level. The first player to build their World Wonder to level 100 wins the server, which stops and restarts after some time. Then a new game begins.

Version history

Travian 3.5 introduced changes to the navigation bar, which, until then, used images from version 2 for the village views.

Version 3 featured oases which could be annexed, and would supplement the player’s hourly resource production, as opposed to the oases in version 2, which were only present for visual appeal. Version 3 also introduced ‘heroes’, units which gain experience in battles. In version 3, the maximum level buildings can be extended to have been increased; moreover, the resource fields in the player’s capital village can be upgraded infinitely, at least theoretically. In practice, crop fields and clay pits can reach level 19 and woodcutters and iron mines can reach level 18. This requires the village center to have 12 warehouses and 7 granaries. An edition of this version where events take place three times faster, known as Travian Speed3x, was released later. Update 3.1 introduced “quests”, which players can complete to receive rewards in the form of resources and game Gold from the Questmaster.

On March 16, 2007, an announcement was made about the release of Travian Classic, known as Travian 2.5, which was based on version 3 but had certain features disabled in order to make it similar to version 2.[15] Version 3.5, an update to the current version, was first implemented on the original .org server (German) in early February, and was implemented on other servers with the game restarting in mid-2009.[14][16][17][18][19]

The full changelog of Travian versions can be found on Travian FAQ.

Forums

Travian forums enable players to ask questions, recruit, find out about server restarts and much more. The forums use different user names and passwords to the game itself which means that each member has to register to use them.

There are also forums which are only accessible to alliance members. These are used by alliance members to communicate with each other, and are accessed by players using in-game hyperlinks. However, these forums tend to be replaced by external forums if the alliance splits into wings, or becomes a wing of another alliance.

Financing

Travian was initially financed through players upgrading accounts with Travian Plus and web banners. Later, an option for purchasing ‘Gold’ replaced the one for buying ‘Plus’ on most servers. The introduction of ‘Gold’ allowed players to directly influence the game mechanics: for instance, by increasing resource production, instant completion of building and researches or applying a strength bonus to troops. Accounts upgraded with Plus allowed building queues, larger maps and other functional abilities. These effects are similar to the capabilities of user scripts, but implementing these can result in a banning of the offending account as they are against the general terms and conditions of Travian. Travian has also expanded to include a “Travian Shop” which includes Travian-related items like clothing and mugs.

Travian Tribes

Travian has three playable tribes:

  • Gauls
  • Romans
  • Teutons

There is one non-playable tribe:

  • Natars

You can choose between three tribes in Travian, Romans, Gauls and Teutons. Each tribe has got its own advantages and disadvantages and their troop types are very different, too. So it is important to choose the tribe that fits to you perfect.

RomanThe Roman empire is the tribe in Travian which is most easily played by beginners. Because of its high level of social and technological development the Romans are masters at building and its coordination, and their troops are part of the elite in Travian.
They are very balanced and useful in attacks and also in defending. To guarantee this variety the Roman troops are trained very long and their training is expensive. Their infantry is a living legend, but their defense against enemy cavalry isn’t as good as that of the other tribes.
For beginners and those players, who don’t know exactly what they want to play, the Romans are the ideal choice.

The Roman troops
Attack value Defense value against infantry Defense value against cavalry Lumber Clay Iron Crop Speed
Legionnaire 40 35 50 120 100 180 40 6
Praetorian 30 65 35 100 130 160 70 5

Equites Caesaris 180 80 105 550 640 800 180 10
Battering Ram 60 30 75 900 360 500 70 4

Senator 50 40 30 30750 27200 45000 37500 4
Settler 0 80 80 5800 5300 7200 5500 5
The specialties
  • Can raise or extend a building and resource field simultaneously.
  • High Defense-bonus by wall
  • Merchants can carry 500 units of resources (speed: 16 fields/hour)
  • Very powerful infantry, average cavalry,
  • Development is expensive and takes a long time.

The GaulsThe Gauls are the most peaceful of all three tribes in Travian. Their troops are trained for an excellent defense, but their ability to attack can still compete with the other two tribes. The Gauls are born riders, their horses are famous for their speed which allows their riders to hit the enemy exactly where they can cause the most damage and swiftly take care of their confused enemies.

This tribe is very easy to defend, but an aggressive tactic is possible, too. It gives you the opportunity to develop into any possible strategic direction (defensive or aggressive, lone wolf or reliable helper, merchant or plunderer, infantry or cavalry, settler or conqueror), but you need a bit of experience and talent. Nevertheless also a tribe for beginners!

TeutonThe Teutons are the most aggressive tribe. Their troops are notorious and feared for their rage and frenzy when they attack. They move around as a plundering horde, not even afraid of death.

But they lack the military discipline of the Gauls or Romans, which causes their weaknesses in speed and defense. For aggressive and experienced players the Teutons are an excellent choice!
